Music Video Commentary

video
This is our commentary of the Music Video and Digipak. For this task we had to answer our evaluation questions as a group. We each used parts of our evaluation to answer the 4 questions. We decided to have a small clip of our music video as the intro and then cut to us sitting next to the computer with the video playing in the background. We also showed our Digipak and talked about our ancillary tasks this was effective because the audience can see what we are talking about and can understand our ideas. Our Commentary is roughly 5 minutes long and we talk about all of our products and manage to answer the question and all of us input our own answers.

Final Evaluation Of Music Video

I am very pleased with how our media product has turned out. We made our music video for the song "You Are The Moon" by a group called The Hush Sound. We think that the genre of the song is Indie/Pop  therefore we included the conventions that you would expect to see in an Indie/Pop music video. Even though the genre of our song is Indie/Pop we looked at some mainstream pop videos for inspiration. Beyonce's "Broken Hearted Girl" video particularly inspired us. Most of the video is in black and white and we liked how these sections told the narrative and the black and white effect made it look as if the artist was looking back at memories. Another section from the video that gave us ideas was when Beyonce is wearing a long, flowing dress and picking the petals off a rose. The petal picking part has been put into reverse through editing which we thought was a really interesting technique. When creating our music video we had a scene where the artist throws a bunch of leaves up in the air which later when editing we put into slow motion and reversed. This is one of our favourite scenes.

In our music video we used a variety of camera angles and shots for example long shots, mid shots, close-ups, canted angles and establishing shots. This is a convention you would expect to see in any music video because camera movement is very important to keep the audience interested throughout the whole song. We made sure we had close-ups of the artist's body for instance hands, feet, face, so that there was voyeurism in the video, making sure we kept to the Goodwin's points. We also had shots of the artist singing and playing the piano at the same time to sell the artist and show that she had more than one talent. Selling the artist and making sure the visuals matched the lyrics are both Goodwin's points that we had to consider. The lyrics are all about a girl comparing the boy she loves to the beauty of nature therefore our settings for the video were outside by natural surroundings for instance trees, leaves, water, etc. The artist lay down in the leaves, walked outside in bare foot and held a rose in the video to show she was at home with nature. The song was slow and calm so the visuals had to keep to the same pace as it is important in music videos that the visuals are relevant to the music. When editing our music video footage we changed it from colour to black and white as we thought it suited the style of the song. We also adjusted the brightness and contrast so that the picture was more defined and professional looking.

When creating our DVD cover for the music video we edited the photograph on the front cover to black and white so that it related well to the video. We used a close-up photograph of the artist's face on the DVD cover to sell the artist and so the audience could see clearly who she was and would recognise her from the music video. We chose a font that was white, italic and flowing because we thought it fit perfectly with the genre of the song and style of the video. For our magazine advert we used a screen-grab from the video as the main photograph which was also in black and white again to relate it to the video. The photograph was a long shot showing the artist walking beside a river holding her flower. We used the same font for the magazine advert as we did for the DVD cover to keep a running theme throughout our ancillary products. The magazine advert was advertising the DVD therefore we included a picture of the front cover in the advert. I think that the combination of our main product and ancillary products link well together. If you saw the magazine advert you would recognise the photo from the music video and you would also know what the DVD looked like if you went to purchase it.

The feedback we have received has been very positive. People agreed with us that the black and white suited the genre of the song well and that it helped create a romantic atmosphere in the video. They also liked the costume because it made the artist stand out and helped portray her as pure and innocent. People said that the visuals matched the lyrics well and that the artist's performance was convincing. They also really liked our ancillary products as they thought they linked well together. Overall we were very happy with our audience's feedback.

A media technology we used in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages was the internet particularly looking on google and youtube. Google allowed us to research existing music DVD covers and adverts to give us an idea of what we needed to create. Youtube was very helpful for watching existing music videos that could inspire us for our own work. The most important media technologies we used were FinalCut and Photoshop. FinalCut was the only programme we needed when editing and creating our music video. The programme meant we could achieve a good quality video. In FinalCut we changed the video from colour to black and white then used tools to adjust the brightness and contrast for a more defined picture throughout the video. FinalCut also gave us the opportunity to slow sections down and also reverse them so that the video had variety and kept the audience's attention. Photoshop was ideal for creating our ancillary products. We could carry on our black and white theme by adjusting the images to black and white and both ancillary products could have the same font. On our DVD cover we put small screen-grabs from the video and photoshop helped us to soften the harsh borders of the photos so that they blended in with the background and looked like a professional DVD cover.

Final Music Video Evaluation...

1) In our media product, 'You Are The Moon' music video we knew from the beginning that we wanted it to be professional as possible. Overall, I;m very pleased with how it turned out and feel that it has been a success.

Our music video has a good variety of shots including close-ups, long shots, establishing shots and canted angles. All these different shots made the video more interesting to watch and more appealing to the audience. We used close-ups of different body parts to show voyeurism in the video. This is also a genre characteristic. For example, Heidi's face, hands and feet were featured in the video. This helps to sell the artist and become more appealing to a male audience. This links to the Goodwin's points that we referred to when creating our video. We also used shots with Heidi playing the piano. This shows that she is multi-talented because she can play an instrument as well as sing. Showing that Heidi has more than one talent may make people want to maybe invest in the whole album rather than just one song. The overall look of the video is based around nature, for example rivers, trees etc. We used things like this in our video to link to the lyrics. Before filming we analysed the lyrics and the song was about a girl comparing her boyfriend to nature. This is where we got the idea to use nature surroundings. It shows that she is embracing nature by lying in the leaves and holding a rose. As a colour scheme we decided to film it all in black and white to show the purity of Heidi's character. This used this idea from the Beyonce video 'Broken Hearted Girl' which has similar genre characteristics as our video. We used Finalcut to turn it black and white but we also changed the brightness and contrast to make the pictures more defined and professional. We used the same technique when creating our digipak and magazine advert. We changed both picture to black and white to keep in theme with the video. The images we chose were key because we wanted to make sure we sold the artist in the best way. On the digipak we chose a close-up of Heidi's face to sell the artist and use her looks. Using her face then makes it obvious to the audience who is she and they will be able to link it up to the video. On the back of the digipak we used a picture of some faded leaves to keep in the theme of nature. This was the background. As smaller pictures we used screen grabs from the video. The main screen grab we used was the one of Heidi and Aidan. This showed the narrative of the video and what the audience can expect when watching it. Also the font we used was in white and the style is quite flowly and fits in well with the cover. Other things that featured on the digipak where the information such as age certificate and record label. We also had a track list and special features that would have featured if had made the DVD for real. One final thing we included was a quote from a magazine. This quote helps to sell the artist and the product. It may even encourage the audience to invest in the whole album, not just buying the one single. These features all link to the magazine advert as well. We used the same black and white effect as the video and the DVD cover. The same font was used but unlike the close-up we used on the DVD cover we decided to use a long shot screen grab from the video. The shot we used was Heidi walking by the river. We picked this one because it shows off Heidi's costume which is the white dress. It shows her purity and innocence and reflects the genre very well. It also shows off the location as well and the audience will be able to link it back to the music video. We also included all the required information such as price, where to buy it and the record label. All this information tells the audience where to buy the product which should help raise product sales. Overall I think all three of our products fit really well together and all have an obvious running theme.

2) I think that all of our products fit really well together as they all have the same theme running throughout. All three products are in black and white and are all based around Heidi. She is the centre of attention in all products including the close-up on the DVD cover, the long shot of Heidi on the magazine advert and finally the video is all based around Heidi and she is the only woman in the video and is in all shots. All three products sell the artist because it's obvious to the audience who she is and the genre of the artist. The products show off her looks and the type of person Heidi is. The video shows off Heidi's other talents such as playing the piano. The two ancillary products link very well together as they have related pictures, same font and all sell the artist. Another thing that links them all together is the surrounding of nature. All three have some form of nature within them. For example, the locations in the video, the background of the DVD cover and the location of the picture in the magazine advert. Overall I'm very happy with all our products and think they all link very well together and fit the genre characteristics well.

3) The feedback we have received was really good and we were really pleased. People really liked the ideas that we came up with and people really liked the black and white idea and think that the theme showed Heidi's innocence and purity. People liked her costume because it showed her character and also people liked the small narrative within the video. The feedback also showed that people liked our ancillary products and feeled that they all fitted well together and overall we were really pleased with our feedback.

4) Finalcut and Photoshop were the main programmes we used. Finalcut helped us to achieve the quality of our video we wanted. For example, the use of black and white. We also used the brightness and contrast buttons to help us to define the images more and make Heidi stand out. Another technique we used was the reverse section. We used Finalcut to reverse some sections of our video to add more variety and make it more interesting to watch. Photoshop helped us to match our DVD cover and magazine advert to our video. For example, again the use of black and white and font style. Also we had the ability to fade around the edges of our screen grabs to make them fade in more and fit in better with the genre.

Overall I am very pleased with as a whole as all our products have turned out. I think all the products sell the artist and fit the genre characteristics very well.

Timeline Of Commentary...

1) Open with the beginning of our music video. Just the introduction will be played and we will face it before the singing starts.
2) It will then go into all three us introducing the video and the commentary. Heidi will start talking about the backgroud of the video and our initial ideas. (setting, nature, lyric analysis)
3) Then Yasmin will talk about the choice of costume and ideas based around hair and make up. (white dress shows purity, subtle make up and natural hair, bare feet)
4) Then it will cut to the first instrumental of the video.
5) Aidan will then talk about the locations and the narrative within the video. (guy giving rose to girl, running theme of the rose and why? Symbolic)
6) Next we will show the first verse

Final Music Video Evaluation

1. In our music video we tried to include all of the Goodwin's  Points so that it would fit the conventions. For example we had a variety of close ups of different parts of the artist to give a slight voyeurism effect.  This was also done of our DVD cover and magazine advert, we made sure that Heidi was the main focus on both ancillary products. This also sells the artist and lets the audience easily recognise who she is. In our video we had the artist playing the piano to show off her skills, this was one of our main ideas at the start because it is an effective way of showing  the artists other talents. One way our music video challenges the Goodwin's points is that we haven't tried to add any Intertextuality into our video this is because the song isn't very modern and we felt that there was no need for any. In our music video we used the black and white effect throughout this was done because we felt it suited the style of the song as it is very slow and fits the genre. There are many different shots in our video to make it more interesting and to make it seem less static, this helped create the image of a sad music video. In addition to this there is change of location and a slight narrative to follow as it fits the convention of the song. A Goodwin Point which wasn't really needed in our song was matching the visuals with the lyrics because this is a feature which is mainly used in mainstream pop videos to attract the audience. We used a white costume theme so that there is no colour and doesn't ruin the colour scheme so we had Heidi in a white flowing dress and I had a plain white t-shirt to match colours with her.

2 .I think we combined our music video with our Digipak really well. We used the same theme when creating our DVD cover and magazine advert. Both ancillary products were in black and white to make them easier to link with our music video and to show a certain style. A picture of the artist is included on the DVD cover and an on our magazine advert so that someone could easily see the advert and then immediately go and buy the DVD. This is the Auteur theory where we used similar styles for all 3 of our products and I feel that this was a very good idea as it helps convince the audience what the video will be like. With  our DVD cover we added all the authentic symbols and included the record label on the front so that if the audience likes 1 song they can look at similar artists signed by the same label. This makes the music video look more realistic and is a good way of advertising. We also put information on the back of the DVD case about the music video and other songs from the artist to help sell them. I think our music video and Digipak do well to relate to each other and the features  we included are very  effective because they help sell each other and advertise the artist.

3. Our pitch for our chosen song went well and we were the only group who chose the song. The groups looked forward to seeing what ideas we had come up with and help us come up with an initial main idea. This was the idea of a black and white theme which we decided was our best idea which we then stuck with. The other groups were impressed with our music video and they left us some constructive feedback, The idea of having  our music video in black and white appealed to many people and they told us that it fitted the song and genre of the artist. We decided not to put the rose in colour as this would make the black and white seem less effective but some people thought it would work well. We learnt that more close ups of the artist were needed so we took still pictures and filmed more scenes and added them into our video. This was a helpful idea as it made the video less boring to watch. When the groups analysed our music video they noticed we had used some of the Goodwins points and were impressed and told us what we had done well. 1 group suggested that I should of been included in more scenes but we only wanted a slight narrative so that the attention wasn't drawn away from Heidi as she is the main focus in our video. We did decide to have a small amount of footage together so that a narrative is at the beginning and the end of the video to match the lyrics of the song. For our ancillary tasks we got feedback from our teacher and made some adjustments to the layouts and because we thought it was important to prioritise the title rather than the locations where we could buy it.

All the groups that left feedback were media studies also doing the same tasks so they knew what to look out for and what to analyse. They were also our target audience so they found it easy to relate to. The teacher also knew exactly what we were doing right and what we needed to improve on and helped us a lot with this task.

4.When creating our Music Video we used Final Cut to capture and edit footage. This allowed us to take out footage which wasn't needed and keep is stored. Final Cut was helpful because we were able to take out all the sound for the footage and add the song in the background. It was useful because we could keep coming back to it and added extra footage and re-arranging different scenes. It also allowed us to put all of our footage into black and white which was something we had planned. This was done by clicking on some footage and going onto colour corrector and removing all of the colour we were then able to mess around with the black and white, once this was done we copied the filter onto each bit of footage. We used youtube to get ideas from other music videos and this allowed us to add new effects into our music video e.g we looked at Broken Hearted Girl by Beyonce and saw that she used a reverse effect with flower petals this inspired us to use this effect when we filmed Heidi in a forest and I think it was really effective and a useful way of doing research. Final Cut also helped us when editing our commentary because we filmed ourselves talking and then added it over clips of the music video to make it look more professional and help the audience understand what we are talking about. Photoshop was another programme we used which we found very helpful when creating our DVD cover and magazine advert because the templates were already given to us. It allowed us to crop stills and fit text where we wanted it to go and helped make the Digipak look more realistic. Another thing that has been helpful when doing this task has been Blogger because it has allowed us to plan and each post our own ideas and keep track of our progress and what we still need to do. When Blogger wasn't working we had to use Flikr which was an alternate way of uploading pictures onto the blog so that people could see our work this was a fairly east process and allowed us to keep using images on our blog's.

DVD commentary plan

Location- Possibly in the media classroom with the music video playing on the computer.
We will be on camera answering the questions and then cutting to the video or we will have the camera focused on the video and then cutting to us while speaking. We got this idea from 1 of last years groups and this is effective as it shows everyone contributing and you can also see the video at the same time.

We are going to combine each of our answers and each make a point for all the questions and we will show stills of our magazine advert and DVD cover to show how they relate and discuss our ideas behind this.

Commentary..

1) Video:
- variety of shots e.g close ups, long shots, establishing shots, canted angles,
- colour change to black and white, use of contrast to make the images more defined, gives the video a more professional look
-close-ups of Heidi's face, hands, feet, etc to sell the artist (different body parts to show voyeurism, make it more appealing to a male audience)
-playing piano shows her variety of talent (more than just a singer, this may encourage viewers to to invest in the whole album)
-video is based around nature e.g rivers, trees, leaves etc (visuals link to lyrics)

DVD Cover:
-black and white so fits well with style of video (again used contrast to define the image)
-front cover is a close-up to sell the artist (obvious to the audience who she is)
-font of the writing is curvy, fits well with the genre and video
-on the back, screen-grabs from video to show the narrative of the video (Heidi and Aidan)
-required information such as certificate, record label etc.
-quote from a magazine to sell the artist/product

Magazine Advert:
-same black and white effect as video and DVD cover
-same font
-picture is a long shot from the video (white dress shows purity)
-information shows price, where to buy it (HMV, itunes) record label
-all fit together really well because they all have a running theme

2) All products fit really well together and all have the same theme
-all black and white
-all based around Heidi (centre of the audience's attention)
-all of them sell the artist (close-up showing talent etc)
-cover and magazine advert have related pictures, same font etc.
-surrounded by nature i.e leaves, river, pretty surroundings

3) Feedback has been very good. People really liked that it was in black and white and think that the theme showed Heidi's innocence and purity. People liked her costume because it showed her character and people liked the small narrative within the video.

4) Finalcut and Photoshop were the main programmes we used. Finalcut helped us to achieve the quality of the video we wanted. For example, the use of black and white and the reverse sections to add more variety. Photoshop helped us to match our cover and advert to our video. For example, the use of black and white and font style. Also we could fade around the pictures to make them blend in with the background without a harsh border around them.

Analysing commentary

We analysed group 41's commentary. This group decided to have their commentary over the music video so that you can see what they are talking about. Their answers to the question were very clear and they knew what they were talking about. Each member of the group had something to say and they took it in turns to provide their own answers.

DECAYDANCE and FUELED BY RAMEN are both record labels that have come together to sign many famous bands and artists such as Fall Out Boy, Gym Class Heroes and Travie McCoy.

user998_1166182532 gym-class-heroes-the-papercut-chronicles Travie-McCoy-Billionaire-feat-Bruno-Mars

Decaydance and Fueled By Ramen have also signed The Hush Sound who wrote 'You Are The Moon'. We chose to use Decaydance and Fueled By Ramen on our music video cover and poster because they are their actual record labels. Most of the artists that are signed to Decaydance and Fueled By Ramen are bands. The original ' The Hush Sound' are a band but we have chosen to represent our artist as a soloist. Travie McCoy is a solo artist who originated from the band Gym Class Heroes. Decaydance and Fueled By Ramen have successfully promoted him as a solo artist therefore we believe they would promote our artist well.

P1 02 Music Video DVD Cover

P1-02 Music Magazine Advert

This is our DVD cover and magazine advert. We have kept with the theme of our music video by having them both in black and white which gives a better effect. We Included the artist on the DVD cover and the magazine advert to help the audience recognise.  We also put reviews on both of them to show them off and make them look more impressive.

On the DVD cover we included all the official logos such as the Certificate, Record labels, DVD logo and the bar code. These are all at the bottom and are small size but still visible so that the audience know what the DVD is like. We also included stills from the video to show the audience what to expect and what type of genre this song fits. The stills used give the idea that there is a narrative. The text on the back clearly tells the audience what features are included on the DVD and who was involved in the making of the video. We also added a clear quote at the top to show how NME found the DVD and it helps convince the audience to buy it.

With our magazine advert we also used black and white features so that it can easily be linked with our DVD cover.

P1-04 Final Feedback

The video is of a high quality and probably one of the best in the class, the music matches the visuals especially the black and white filter, as this is consistent. The song is slow and matches the pace of the video and its shots. Another good point is the cameo of the duck at the river and special thanks must be given to him. We thought that Aiden could have been involved in the video more towards the end however it suited because the build up of heidi singing is good.

Final review p1 05

Good flowing camera shots, they didn't last to long which made it entertaining.
Overall worked very well, we like how it sort of told a story, and was filmed well as it was a slow song.

Goodwin's points

Genre characteristics - Matched the genre well, slow love song, this was showed well through Heidis part, and the use of roses and black and white, setting up a love scene.

Music/ Visuals - Music was slow, calm and sad, and so were he visuals.
Sad faced most of the song.

Music / lyrics -

Feedback On Final Video...

p1-01:

Goodwin's points:

voyeurism:
piano playing is an enjoyable talent to watch.
The main artist is attractive to watch

visuals and music:
as the song has a slow beat, the footage fitted well as jump too quickly.

genre characteristics:
the colour choices match the genre of the song. (black and white footage and white dress)

selling the artist:
main focus through out. sold as an artist that is feminine.

Overall, we thought the video was successful because of the choice of scenery also, Heidi made it believable it was her singing due to the good lip syncing and the fact the female artists voice sounded as if it would be her's. The mise-en-scene worked really well especially the lighting with the genre of the song.

Marking Criteria for music video

Marking Criteria(40 marks)

1.Holding a steady shot when appopriate
2.Framing-including and excluding elements
3.Using a variety of shot distances
4.Shooting material appropriate to the task
5.Selecting Mise-en-scene

6.Editing so that the meaning is apparent to the viewer
7.Using varied shot transitions
8. Using sound with images editing appropriately

So far we have made sure that our handheld shots are steady and that the shots look clear we think that we would get the marks for this part of the criteria. We have made sure that the framing is right and that the main artist is the center of the frame in all of the scenes. We have also included a variety of long shots and close ups of the artists to make sure that the video isnt boring. The material we shot is appropriate to the genre and fits it really well. The Mise-en-scene in our video is the flower at the beggining and also the costumes used are appropriate colours. For our video we have used a black and white editing style which suits the genre of our chosen song and we think that the viewer will understand this. In between shots we have modified the speed for added effect and to go with the tempo of the song. In order to gain extra marks we are planning on adding video transitions between scenes to show off editing skills and to make the video look more appealing. We will add fades between shots so that it still fits the style of the song

Analysing blog of the week-T134

This blog of the week is really good for many reasons. Firstly they have gone into detail about the locations they have filmed in and have even included images from google maps to make it easier to find out about their filming. They have also added stills from filming to put in their blog which is extra proof of filming and shows how the filming went. They have given clear information on how they got to these certain locations and even put a red circle to show exactly where their  filming took place. This group has done plenty of research  and has shown clearly that they know what they are writing about and have included alot of detail and shown good analysis skills. Pictures were added to make it clear what was being analysed and were made bigger than the text to stand out. This groups plannng is very impressive as they have done different posts to show stages of their planning and to help show off their ideas and all of their ideas it also shows thing that went wrong and how they managed to sort the problem. They have accepted feedback from teachers and other groups and analysed the strengths and weaknessed of their work. Overall this blog if full of detail and pictures which show that this group are wroking hard and know what they are doing and that they  have been prepared.

We think that for our blog we could add more detail on each post to show that we have planned and understood what we are trying to do. This could be done by analysing individual parts of our video and by adding pictures in to make it clear and easy to understand. One thing we could of done that this group has is add stills from filming to show off the locations and how the filming went. This could also of been done by using this groups idea of using google maps to show our locations during flming.

Teacher Feedback

Well done on your Rouch cut P1-02. I think you have worked well to meet the genre conventions of your video. Although their is a lot of shot variety I think some of the shots appear a bit static and so taking the dolly on the reshoot will really help the look of your video.
Using Youtube tutorials is a great way to learn new skills, making the flower stand out is an interesting idea. Be aware that this can be time consuming to do.

Feedback Analysis...

We are very pleased with the feedback that the class has given us. Most of what has been said we thought it would have been said. We agree with nearly everything that has been said but some we don't.  Someone said that some scenes could have all been in colour but we feel that having it all in black and white shows Heidi's innocence. We do however feel that we should add some colour in the video. We had the idea of turning the flower red to add more effect and make the flower stand out.  We are going to attempt to do this by using the tutorial on youtube. Overall we are very happy with the feedback and feel that we can use it to help make our video better and more appealing.

Rough cut Feedback P1-03

The timing in the video was perfect really gave a sence of her actually singing the song.
Genre Characteristics - I think the settings used in the video were good matching the genre of the song. i think it was a good choice to go with the black and white theme as we think it fits well. And makes you stand out in the white dress.
Visual Lyrics- there are no visual lyrics as such but we dont find this as nessersary as other video with a more upbeat song.
Voyeurism- Heidi is pretty and fits the part well no more voyeurism would be nessersary in this video.
Need to sell the Artist- The artist comes accross as 'pure' with the black and white theme.
Intertextuality- Typical cambridge city scene!

P1-04 Feedback

We thought the video was better than any others in the class except ours, the idea of putting the clips in black and white added a purity and innoncence however their could be some colour possibly to highlight the rose to give it more significance. The lip synicing could more emphasised to make it more believable that she is singing it.

P1-05 feedback

We thought the black and white effect was good, it fit in well with the music. We thought it would be better if they finished it off. we could see the camera's shadow on one of the shots. It would be better if other members of the group were in the video. the video was a little boring but it was well done and well edited all together.

Feed back from p1-01

We feel that the style and atmosphere matches the song genre really well because of the femininity and calmness.

Heidi lip sync really well.

We thought they had a good amount of locations which all matched the genre is this good because it made the song appear less dull/slow. However, we feel some shots should be put in colour so it's more vibrant.

Goodwin's points:

Voyeurism: the locations and artist are both appealing to watch
Music and lyrics: we didn't see any matching music and visuals

Music and visuals: The pace of Heidi walking matches with the slowness of the song.

Star Analysis- BEYONCE

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WByOshUkEoo
"Baby Boy"
I have chosen to analyse Beyonce because she is a star with many looks and many years in the music industry. Since splitting with Destiny's Child she has had a very successful solo career. One of her first singles as a soloist was "Baby Boy" which she did with Sean Paul. I would say that the video for "Baby Boy" is quite a typical R&B video. Most of the video is set at night time so the lighting is dark and there are sections of Beyonce dancing in a nightclub atmosphere which is to attract a youthful audience. Voyeurism is used as Beyonce wears revealing clothing in the video and there are close ups of her toned stomach and hips as she dances which is to attract a male audience. There are parts in the video where Beyonce is on a beach with a group of girls doing a dance routine. Beyonce is at the front of the group which shows she is leading the dance. This shows of her dancing talents aswell as her singing talents, young girls watching the video would look up to Beyonce. As always, Beyonce looks attractive in the video, her hair and make up are both quite natural, there is nothing unusual or different about it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LEyfk97Gs7o
"Diva"
In Beyonce's "Diva" video her image has changed quite a lot. The whole video is in black and white and is set in a scrapyard and warehouse giving it a 'run down' look. It begins with her walking through the scrapyard in high heels, jeans, a leather jacket and some unusual fringed metal glasses. She is walking slowly and chewing gum. Her image portrays confidence and power. Inside the warehouse the lighting is dark and dingy where Beyonce dances with 2 other women. The dancing is fast and full of attitude, Beyonce looks as if she owns the place. In the video she wears some very unusual and stylised outfits and her eye make up is big and exaggerated which shows she is not afraid to try new looks. This video contrasts with the "Baby Boy" video a lot. In her earlier video her aim was to look pretty and sexy where as in the "Diva" video it is more about looking like a strong and confident woman.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TA-QMT2P-9I
"Why Don't You Love Me"
One of Beyonce's most recent singles is "Why don't you love me". The video again is very different to "Baby Boy" and "Diva". It is set in the 1950s and Beyonce is portayed as a stereotypical housewife from the 50s, however with a sexy twist to her style. There are about 11 or 12 costume changes throughout the video which show lots of different sides to Beyonce. She is portrayed as cute, sexy, independent, stylish, strong, full of attitude and classy all in this one video. Her singing, dancing and acting skills are all used to show she is multi-talented. Voyeurism is used as Beyonce wears revealing clothing to show off her body. However this is done in a stylish way which would make a female audience want to look like her. I think that over the years Beyonce matures throughout her videos. I think that she is not afraid to try different styles to stand out from the crowd and she pulls them off well.

Star Analysis... Rihanna

Rihanna is known for her singing talent across the globe. She has made so many different music videos and has also collaborated with many different artists including Eminem, T.I and Jay Z. She has a very unique style and is constantly changing her appearance.
Throughout her time in the music industry she has changed her appearance so many times. In her first music video, Pon De Replay, she is shown as young woman just having fun in a club.

As she is a new artist at the time, the video shows that she is the leader of the pack and very popular. This shows the audience that she is well liked and could potentially be a very successful artist. She is on a platform during sections of the video and that puts up in the air and the center of attention. There are lots of close ups of her face and different body parts to show off her looks and body. It shows that she is very toned and obviously keeps fit. This is something that people will be attracted to as girls may want to look and her and get her style, whereas men will find it visually appealing. There are only a couple of costume changes in the video and this then doesn't distract the audience away from her and they don't focus on what she's wearing. She also dances in the video which shows that she has other talents as well as singing. There is also a narrative to the video, which puts Rihanna in the centre of the story. She is the one that makes the DJ turn the music up and she is the one that gets everybody dancing and having a good time. She is the trend setter that everyone follows. Visually the video is quite normal and has been done before by other artists. Most artists at some point in their career have a video based in a club. However, at some points the visuals to match the lyrics. For example, when she sings 'turn the music up!', the DJ turns the volume up on his decks. Another example is when she sings 'run, run, run, everybody move, run!', all the people in the club move to a different section and carry on dancing. In the bridge of the song, the girls do a section of dance and Rihanna is in the middle and slightly forward from the rest of them. This shows again that she is leader and everybody wants to be seen with her. This was a very successful video as it was the beginning of Rihanna's career and it set her up to become the artist she is today.

Disturbia...

In the video for 'Distubia' it shows a very dramatic change that Rihanna has made as an artist. The video shows off her new image which includes her new hair style and various new tattoos. The video is very unusual and quite bizarre in places. She really pushes the boundaries as an artist and it almost seems like she is showing a different side to her. The video shows off her new looks and the video is selling her by her new looks. In 'Pon De Replay' she was the party girl that everyone wanted to be seen with but in this video, she seems an outsider and some of her looks are quite freaky. The video's theme is like a horror film and she shows off many unusual looks that the audience hasn't seen from Rihanna before. It shows that as an artist she isn't afraid to take risks and stand out from the other artists in the industry. She has so many different looks in this video and it shows that she is very versatile in the way she looks but also the music she produces. This song sounds very different to 'Pon De Replay' and matches the video as well. Even though she looks very unusual and outlandish in places, she still manages to look sexy and right up to date with fashion. The costumes may be unusual but they match the music and lyrics visually and I don't think the video would have been as successful if it wasn't as unusual as it is. It shows that she still looks amazing no matter what she is wearing. She has so many different costumes in this video which is different from her previous video. Although, the same as  'Pon De Replay' she is dancing in the video and it show off her many talents. I think this video appeals to a different audience that 'Pon De Replay' as it is more adult like and appeals to adults as well as teenagers. Overall the video is very eye catching and stands out from the other videos that were being released at a similar time. Again, this is a very successful video as it shows that Rihanna is capable of many different things and people are starting to take her seriously as an artist.

Rude Boy...

In the video for 'Rude Boy', Rihanna has another image change. This time, her hair is blonde and her overall image is a lot more seductive than in previous videos. This video is really showing off her looks and her body and again it is a dramatic change from her other videos. This video is full of colour and very eye catching. A variety of colours are used including reds, blues, greens, purples and many more. There is a theme of animals and animal print through out the video. For example she is wearing leopard print and she is sitting on a lion, zebra and has a snake around her neck. This theme reminds me of Jamaica, the fact that she is surrounded by animals and the colours used in the video are similar to the colours of the flag. This again is a dramatic change in her video. 'Disturbia' is very dark and sinister whereas 'Rude Boy' is full of colour and a very catchy, upbeat song. The video shows off her talents again by her dancing but also this time she is playing an instrument, the drums, which shows another musical side to her. Also shows that all the men want her because all the attention is focused on her and she is the only female. Like in the 'Disturbia' video her clothes are quite unusual but they work with the setting and theme of the video. Her make up is quite heavy around the eyes and lips which accents her best assets and makes her look more sexy and appealing. This is very different from her first video 'Pon De Replay' were her make up is very natural. The visuals and lyrics match each other very well, for example, when she says 'want, want, want' and 'boom, boom, boom' the words appear on the screen in bright colours and stand out from the other things that are happening at the time. Once again, this was a very successful video which stood out from other artist's videos at the time.

Only Girl (In The World)...

This is her latest video called 'Only Girl (In The World)'.Yet again Rihanna has changed appearance in a very dramatic way. This time her hair is a vivid red and middle length. This new image goes to show that she can constantly reinvent herself and everytime she does, its something completely different. I think this video is quite feminine and girly. The clothes she is wearing are very floaty and pale in colour. This is very different from 'Distubia' where she wears mostly black and sinister colours and in 'Rude Boy' she wears very bright and eye catching clothes. The overall colour of the video is normal but everything has a red tone to it. For example, the grass is more of a pinky colour rather than green and also the sky is slightly red as well. This accents her new hair colour as everything is based around different shades of red. Even though the video is very girly, she is still very seductive and very appealing to a male audience. Also I think this video would appeal to a very wide audience as it is suitable for children to watch but also adults will find to quite appealing as well. There are loads of girly elements to this video such as the field of flowers, being surrounded by balloons, fireworks, a setting near a lake and on a cliff top. As she is the only person in the video all the attention is on her and her many talents. Personally I think this will be a very successful video as it shows another side to Rihanna and another side to her music. Her last couple of songs such as 'Te Amo', 'Russian Roulette' and  'Hard' released off the 'Rated R' album had a very edgy sound and look to them. Her next album called 'Loud' which is released in November seems to have a more girly and subtle feel like 'Only Girl (In The World).

Overall Rihanna is a very successful artist who continues to grow through out her time in the music industry. She is very iconic and everyone can't wait to see what her next video is going to be like.

Star Analysis N-Dubz

N-Dubz consists of three members who have different personalities which helps appeal to a wider audience. By having 3 members it makes it easier to appeal to the audience because each member is individual. The first member is Dappy who is the main member of N-Dubz and he is the weird and funny one and his signature style is the way he wears his hats. The 2nd member is Tulisa and she is the only female member of N-Dubz she appeals to both male and female audience because of her looks and her style. Fazer is the 3rd member and is the only black member of N-Dubz which makes him appeal to a certain audience. This is a very good thing for them as they can appeal to many different ethnic groups and both genders and will help them become very popular with the young generation.
Before they became N-Dubz they were a group called Lickle Rinsers Crew and were only known on
 pirate radio.

UncleB
This is 1 of their early albums and was made when Ndubz were starting to become known and has some of their first songs.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6FcGn2MHm8c&ob=av2e
The style of the N-Dubz videos has changed since they were first signed by a record label. In 1 of their early videos 'You Better Not Waste My Time' the video is not very glamorous and you can see that there has not been a huge amount spent on making the video. It also shows them as a group making their first hit and keeping their original image with trendy clothes but not very expensive. It also showed off their individual talents and signature styles which helps the audience recognise them. In  this video their isnt many things that are recognisable and there isnt any intertexuality. This was something that realised and in one of their newer hits they have tried to include these features.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0QFLZCH3FI
'Playing With Fire' is one of N-Dubz newest songs and you can see they have made many changes now that they are main stream artists. Straight from the start you can see a flashy logo with their name to help the audience recognise them. This video was released when N-Dubz became well known and as you can see in the video they have had a bigger budget when creating it. Their outfits are very stylish and completely different to their first video. This shows that they tried to change their image to help appeal to a more modern audience. Also Mr Hudson is featured in this video to show that they work with other popular artists and is another way of boosting their reputation. They have used better locations and also used intertextuality which wasn't used in their older videos. It is still easy to identify each unique member which is something they use in everyone of their music videos.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9n85vK5Ozns
N-Dubz very latest song is 'Best Behaviour and they have used a similar style to the songs on their recent album. At the beggining of the video the logo is shown again and the members are shown standing in front of a private jet and 2 hummers. This links to the fact that they are now rich and famous.

N Dubz - Against All Odds album art
This is their latest album cover and you can see how much they have changed since they became a popular group. Their clothes are different and their style has changed to suit the modern audience.

Day Two Of Filming...

On Wednesday we carried on filming, this time in a different location. We started in the music room again to film the rest of the piano shots and then we went to a woodland area not far from college. Originally we had planned to film in a field however we had to settle for a woodland area instead because there were no fields available. We are happy with what we have captured and think it is enough to start editing. Now that all of our footage is put together we can start the editing today.

Lyrics Analysis

"You Are The Moon"

Shadows all around you as you surface from the dark
Emerging from the gentle grip of night's unfolding arms
Darkness, darkness everywhere, do you feel all alone?
The subtle grace of gravity, the heavy weight of stone

You don't see what you possess, a beauty calm and clear
It floods the sky and blurs the darkness like a chandelier
All the light that you possess is skewed by lakes and seas
The shattered surface, so imperfect, is all that you believe

I will bring a mirror, so silver, so exact
So precise and so pristine, a perfect pane of glass
I will set the mirror up to face the blackened sky
You will see your beauty every moment that you rise

The theme of the song is love. She is singing about her lover and comparing his qualities to nature's beauty. We want to portray this in our video through our choice of locations and mise-en-scene.

First Lesson After filming

We have captured our footage and got straight down into editing. As we've been going through our footage we've been cutting out the bloopers and just making sure what we have on there are shots we want to use or could use. We think we have a lot of footage to work from, we have many varied locations not to mention lots of different angles and shots, this is going to make our music video interesting and appealing. We did have some difficulty when it came to changing our footage into black and white but we soon got some help with this, hopefully we've learned and we'll be able to complete this task on our own for next week.

Day One Of Filming...

On Wednesday 6th October we started filming for our music video. We were very lucky with the weather on that day as it was sunny which was perfect for the setting. We managed to find some appropriate places to film for instance a pretty street where the sun was shining strongly, an archway in the garden of the university, a river bank and some more streets around Cambridge. There were slight complications when it came to filming in one of the universities, we didn't get permission and were asked to leave the premises but we did manage to capture a bit of footage. We had forgotten to bring the flower so we ended up popping into Sainsbuy's and buying a bunch of flowers, we decided this was actually a better idea than just finding and using a single flower throughout as we can freeze the other roses and use them as back up. We managed to get a lot of filming in on our first day, we made sure we shot a lot of extra footage so that we have a lot to edit with, we will finish off next week with the last little bits and the field scenes and hope that we can be as successful as our first day.

Mise-en-Scene INDIE

You are the Moon by the Hush Sound is classed as an original 'Indie' genre.  This means that the band are and independent band and not signed to a major record label. The typical mise-en-scene in an indie video  would be a different style with scruffy and 'individual'.

Props: Mostly the artist are shown playing instruments, this shows off their individual talents.

Make-up: Not heavy, if make-up is used it's used very lightly (males and females) you may find the men using a slight layer of eyeliner.

Costume: They tend to mix a bit of smart with scruffy, there are a lot of shirts and chequered clothing used. Hat, scarves, and various other accessories are used to personalise each individual member.

Lighting: Tends to be rather dull looking, not a lot of brightness.

Colour: Their is a lot of black and white often used and tend to use odd colours which aren't always trendy.

Sets: They tend to use a variety of random locations and use quick cuts to change.

Feedback

- We need to go on youtube and watch a video on how to add colour to black and white.
- Use a bright studio light to represent the sun, it looks better than using final cut all the time but we could still use final cut to brighten the scene.
- Use an umbrella to sheild the camera if it rains.
- Make a back-up plan for if it rains.
- Plan film time,  we don't want to waste time and film.
- We need to ask permission to film around the university.
- Make sure the piano playing is believable.

Music Video Pitch- You are the Moon

Editing Style:
possible black and white theme to make the video fit the style of the song and then shots of different beautiful looking places e.g nature, fields this links to lyrics of the woman singing. Plenty of long-shots and close ups of different scenes.
-Main focus on artist walking and singing in separate locations
This is the sort of field we want in our video

This is the sort of image we would like in the video

Colour/lighting- Possibly at night to link with moon theme and dark. Maybe shots of moon and clouds.

Genre Conventions- Our ideas fit the conventions of this song because it seems like a slow and typical love song. We plan to do this by having beautiful scenery and focusing on artist wandering and possibly a couple.
Slow shots and cuts to fit with tempo of song and lyrics.
We also plan to a running theme of love story with a young couple with slight narrative.

Props- Punt for 1 scene?, Piano scenes to link with song(Grand).
Flowers as a theme throughout the video.
Bike for the artist as camera tracks her through town.
Cast- Main artist in most of the video with other people included. We decided that Heidi will be the main artist for the music video. We might have extras to be in the video as friends. Aidan will play the boy in the music video.

How our video meets Goodwins points.
1.Voyeurism
2.Intertextuality
3.Lyrics with Video
4.Lyrics with Music
5.Genre Characteristics
6.Selling the Artist

We plan to match the lyrics with the music and make the video slow and in a black and white theme and there will be a narrative throughout. The Lyrics talk about different beautiful things and we will link this with the locations we have chosen. We will also try to sell the artist by having her as the main focus of the music video and being involved in the narrative this will also be done by showing her piano skills which links with the song and this will be done by having a variety of shots while the artist is on the piano.  This is effective because most artists like to show that they have other skills as well as singing and is an important way of showing off the artist An example of this would be the artist
Vanessa Carlton because in her music video of 1000 miles she is shown throughout the whole video playing the piano but with background changes this could be a possible idea for our music video as it is very effective. We are not sure whether we will use Intertextuality in our music video as we don't think it is needed for our chosen song as there isn't any mentioned in the lyrics of the song. This would also be difficult to pull off. There will be slight Voyeurism with close-ups of the artist but not too much as we are using the artists piano skills. We will try to match the lyrics with the video by using shots of the Moon which is mentioned in the title so we could possibly show the moon at the beginning and end of the video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cwkej79U3ek-Vanessa Carlton(1000 miles)

You Are The Moon Music Video Pitch...

Location: We have analyised the lyrics and the basic idea is about a woman comparing a boy to nature's beauty. Using this idea, we have decided to use many different locations based around nature. For example, in a field, by the river, around the universities, a bridge or archway, on a bike. During the video, we plan to cut between scenes and also have shots of her playing the piano, to show her musical talent which is selling the artist.

Initial Ideas: We want the girl to look pure and innocent, by putting her in a long flowing, gentle white dress so she looks like an angel. We have ideas of using a low angle shot looking up at the girl with her hair and dress flowing in the wind looking very angelic. At the very beginning before she starts singing there will be a scene where the boy gives the girl a white flower and you will see the flower in different shots throughout the video. Another shot idea is to film the girl's reflection in the river. She will sit on the side of the river with her feet dangling in the water and she will drop her white flower into the river and watch it float away. We like the idea of showing the couple looking very intimate together and the sun shining through the gaps between them.

Performance Style: Our idea is to have a narrative throughout the video. We want it to show the love she has towards the boy and the connection they have between each other. Also we want to show her playing the piano to show her multiple talents and to vary to the scences throughout the video. This will keep the audience interested.

Music Video Pitch

One choice is Track 7 which is 'You are the moon'- Hush Sound'
- Possible beach theme/ loneliness
- Boy and girl
- Surreal
- Outcast watching at Train station
- Location - Hunstanton
- Moon shots, night sky
- Pretty and elegant

Our other choice is Track 1 'Wind Your Waist- Anisha Nicole'
We'd make it really dancy and upbeat, lots of colours and fun, freestyling and routines. We've got the perfect amount of guys and girls in our group to make this work.

POSSESION - DVD Cover

We struggled with the layers and how to merge them and use them properly, we had a lot of problems with this which set back our time and was the main reason we were then rushed for the rest of the little time we had left.

For the real thing we would need a couple of lessons, perhaps less. When it comes to doing the real thing we will need to go away and plan it, this will save a lot of time and therefore we wont need as long.

We have learnt more about how to layer and edit the layers even though more practice is necessary in this area as there is a lot to learn about all the things you can do with layers  and at the end of the day is very complex.

DVD Cover Analysis

SUPER HUMAN- Missy Elliott and Busta Rhymes

  • The two famous hip-hop artists on the front, this clearly states the genre.
  • The writing is in mustard yellow which stands out over the red background.
  • All the details are on the bottom of the back, this is there as it's not as engaging.
  • The photo of Missy Elliott is out of focus and poor quality, this is not what you would expect from a published DVD.
Conventions

  • Everything you would expect to see on a DVD cover is on it e.g Age Certificate, DVD logo, Special features, still photos from the video and running time etc.
  • The cover attracts the target audience by making the artists prominent on the front. However the colours and fonts on the cover are ugly and amateur looking.

Chris Cunningham - Auteur Theory

Chris Cunningham can be considered an Auteur director because in his videos he uses the same signiture weird style. This can be recognised when he uses the weird, twisted faces. He uses a males face with a creepy smile and puts the face on to children and women's bodies. Wefound the videos quite disturbing and uncomfortable. This director is easily recognisable as his videos use a sci-fi/horror theme. The videos aren't pleasurable to watch however once you have watched it, you would want to tell people about it becasue it is so unusual and abstract. The viewer is most likely not to watch the video again but would tell others about it, which would then make them watch it out of curiousity.
